12/28/2022 0 Comments Super mario land 2 box artI hope Nintendo thinks outside the box like this in a future 2D Mario game someday. It's only $4 on the 3DS eShop so I highly recommend it. This game is criminally overlooked and I think more people need to be aware of it. There are other shake-ups to the Mario status quo as well, such as coins serving the different function of being used to play mini-games to increase your lives or gain power-ups. that we all eventually became accustomed to seeing, you have a world where Mario shrinks and explores a house, a world that takes place inside a giant Mario toy, a world set in a tree in which you come across ants and invade a beehive even typical Mario mainstays like the water world and the spooky world are radically different here, with the former including levels like a sunken submarine and the inside of a whale's belly, and the latter having a witch's castle and a Japanese yokai-inspired area. Instead of typical grassland, desert, snow level, lava level, etc. The zones themselves are also wildly inventive in their themes. The game's map is non-linear, as you are free to move about the world and go to any zone in any order that you like. First of all, the plot has nothing to do with rescuing a princess or fighting Bowser instead, it's about Mario getting his castle back (because Mario apparently owns a castle in this one) from Wario, who made his debut appearance here. It totally mixed up the 2D Mario formula and offered great imagination in its design that no Mario game before or since replicated.
